Safe mode does not work when there are no left angle-brackets in the source

In the “Edit Web” page, selecting “Markup syntax: Markdown” and then checking “Safe mode” results in the following error when the “Update Web” button is pushed:

    private method `gsub!’ called for nil:Nil Class?
